Usnea Lichen, also known as 'Old Mans Beard' is a natural antibiotic used in traditional medicine to treat infections, skin ulcers and respiratory issues such as bronchitis and pneumonia. It contains usnic acid which acts as an immune supporter.

Usnic Acid is a natural, yellow-pigmented compound found in lichens, and widely used for its strong antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties.

How to Harvest Usnea Lichen?

This herb is primarily located in the Pacific NorthWest and hangs from the branches on hardwood and coniferous trees in moist and mature forests. This can be found year round but easier to spot in the winter months.

Identification: This lichen is grey-green, resembling hair or a shrub, and when carefully pulled apart, it reveals a unique, stretchy white central cord

It best to be pulled off of branches that have fallen on the ground rather than taking it from a living tree. If the Usnea Lichen is sparse in the areas, avoid harvesting it from that area. Don't take more than one fifth of the available population. Try not to harvest near factories, roads or polluted areas.

Once harvested, clean. the Usnea Lichen and remove any and all debris that may be entangled. Next set up your Mesh Herb Dryer and air dry the Lichen completely. This may take a few days.

Be careful not to harvest toxic look alike's. Always be sure to identify your plants/herbs correctly before harvesting and making tinctures, oils, or salves.

Methods of using dried Usnea Lichen

Tincture (best method)

This requires a dual extraction method. One using alcohol and one using water. The alcohol is a must in order to get the usnic acid out of the Lichen since its not water-soluble.

  • First things first, grab the dried Lichen and add it to a jar with 80-100 proof alcohol (I prefer gin).

  • Add the Lichen and alcohol to a 1:2 ratio.

  • Leave it for 6 weeks in a cool, dark place. Shake it every few days to ensure it gets evenly coated.

  • Bring distilled water to a boil

  • After 6 weeks, strain the mixture using a cheesecloth and place the used lichen in boiling water

  • 1:2 ratio, reduce the heat to a low simmer for minimum 30 minutes to several hours.

  • Strain with a cheesecloth then combine with alcohol mixture. 3:1 ratio. For every 3 cups of the alcohol mixture, add 1 cup of water.

  • Store in a dark amber glass bottles for up to 5+ years for storage.

  • Start with taking 2-3 drops diluted in water or juice for 7-10 days (can increase number of drops as tolerance builds)

  • Use at your own risk!

Tea

This is great for soothing a sore throat or a cough almost immediately. Its also an excellent alcohol-free method for those who don't like to use alcohol-based extracts. One note is that it is known for having a bitter taste.

  • Use 10-20grams of dried Usnea Lichen per 1 cup of water.

  • Simmer slowly for 10-30 minutes, longer for a more concentrated tea.

  • Serve and enjoy! You can add honey to combat the bitter taste and provide additional benefits.

Topical

Dried Usnea dressings
  • Take some of the dried Lichen and moisten it. Apply it to the affected area.

  • Be sure to patch test it first in a small area. If it turns red or flakey do not use it.

  • You can use it as a dressing for a few days.

Infuse in Oil
  • Method 1: Slow Cooker (Fastest): Mix 1 part dried Usnea with 2 parts carrier oil (such as olive, almond, or coconut) in a heatproof jar. Place the jar in a slow cooker with a few inches of water and heat on low for 4–6 hours.

  • Method 2: Cold Infusion (Best for potency): Put the chopped Usnea in a jar, cover it with oil, and let it sit in a warm location for 3–6 weeks.

  • Strain: Use cheesecloth to strain the oil, squeezing out as much as possible. The final oil should have a golden colour.

  • Place into jars in a cool dark place for 6-12 months.

Turn oil into Lotion
  • 1/2 cup Usnea infused oil

  • 1/2 cup distilled water

  • 1 tbsp beeswax

  • 1 tsp Vitamin E oil

  • Optional: 5-10 drops of your favourite essential oil.

  • HOW: Melt the wax in a double boiler melting it gently. Heat the water to the same temperature as the oil and mix together. Using an immersion blender until it turns white. Add vitamin E oil and essential oils then blend again. Pour into sterile jars. Store in a cool, dark place for 6-12 months.

Turn oil into a Salve
  • 1/4 cup Beeswax (pellets or grated).

  • 1 cup infused oil

  • Optional: 5-10 drops of your favourite essential oil.

  • HOW: Melt beeswax in double boiler, pour in infused il and mix together. immediately pour into jars and let harden.

Both the lotion and salve can be used for:

  • Wound Care: Applied to minor cuts, scrapes, and burns to prevent infections, thanks to its effectiveness against gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus.

  • Skin Infections & Irritations: Used for persistent skin infections, boils, eczema, and rashes.

  • Fungal Infections: Works well against athlete’s foot, ringworm, and other fungal skin issues.

  • Anti-inflammatory Agent: Aids in calming inflamed, red, or sensitive skin.

  • After-shave/Skincare: Acts as a soothing balm for skin irritations, like those on legs after shaving.

  • Natural Preservative: Occasionally included in natural skincare products for its ability to inhibit bacterial growth.

Storage

Store in a cool, dark place.

  • Shelf Life: Dried Usnea maintains potency for 1–2+ years

  • Alcohol Tinctures can store up to 5+ years

Indicator of Degradation: If the colour fades substantially over time, it is probably losing its effectiveness and should be replaced.
